Here are the major highlights of day 11 of the Paris Olympics 2024:
Skateboarding:
Arisa Trew grabbed gold in a women’s park as the 14-year-old became the first Australian woman to win an Olympic skateboarding medal.
Trew delivered a gutsy and precise performance on her third and final run and was rewarded with a huge score of 93.18 to become the youngest medallist at the Paris Games.
Japan’s Cocona Hiraki won silver and Britain’s Sky Brown took bronze.
Equestrian:
Germany’s Christian Kukuk won Olympic gold in men’s individual jumping on Tuesday, showing a flawless ride in the final jumpoff.
Swiss Steve Guerdat won silver with his horse Dynamix de Belheme and Dutch Maikel van der Vleuten with horse Beauville Z won bronze.
Diving:
China’s Quan Hongchan won the women’s 10-metre platform event on Tuesday, bagging the country's fifth diving gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
Quan retained her Tokyo title on 425.60 points from teammate Chen Yuxi who again won silver. North Korea's Kim Mi Rae took the bronze.
Wrestling:
Cuban wrestling great Mijain Lopez became the first Olympian to win five golds in the same individual event on Tuesday after winning the men’s 130kg Greco-Roman final.
Lopez’s 6-0 victory over silver medallist Yasmani Acosta of Chile at the Champ de Mars arena.
Meng Lingzhe of China and Amin Mirzazadeh of Iran shared bronze.
Also in the Greco-Roman section, in which holds below the waist are prohibited, Japan’s Kenichiro Fumita won the 60 kg gold with a 4-1 win against Cao Liguo of China, who took silver.
Ri Se Ung of North Korea and Zholaman Sharshenbekov of Kyrgyzstan took bronze.
In the women’s 68kg final, Amit Elor of the Unites States won the gold, while Meerim Zhumanazarova of Kyrgyzstan won the silver.
Buse Tosun Cavusoglu of Turkey and Nonoka Ozaki of Japan took bronze.
Cycling:
The Netherlands trio of Roy van den Berg, Harrie Lavreysen and Jeffrey Hoogland on the men’s team sprint to power to gold.
Roy van den Berg, Harrie Lavreysen and Jeffrey Hoogland rocketed around the three-lap race in 41.191 seconds beating their previous world best of 41.225.
Britain’s trio of Ed Lowe, Hamish Turnbull and Jack Carlin took silver while Australia beat France to take the bronze, their first medal in the men’s team sprint since 2000.
Athletics:
American Cole Hocker delivered one of the all-time Olympic shocks when he won the men’s 1,500 metres gold with a stunning finish to blast past British world champion Josh Kerr
Kerr posted a big national record 3:27.79 and American Yared Nuguse took bronze in 3:27.80.
Canada’s Camryn Rogers won the Olympic women’s hammer throw gold medal with a throw of 76.97 metres on Tuesday.
Annette Echikunwoke of the United States took a surprise silver with 75.48 and China’s Zhao Jie won bronze with 74.27.
Greece’s Miltiadis Tentoglou leapt 8.48 metres to defend the men’s long jump title on Tuesday, delivering his country’s first gold of the Paris Games.
In a high-quality competition, Jamaican Wayne Pinnock took silver with 8.36 and Italy’s Mattia Furlani (8.34) claimed bronze.
Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi won the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase gold medal on Tuesday, setting an Olympic record time of 8 minutes 52.76 seconds.
Uganda’s Peruth Chemutai settled for silver.
Kenyan 20-year-old Faith Cherotich, ranked third in the world, claimed bronze on her Olympic debut.
American Gabby Thomas claimed gold in women’s 200 metres gold on Tuesday
Julien Alfred of Saint Lucia’s first Olympic medal when she won the 100m on Saturday, was fastest out of the blocks but was a clear second in 22.08, with Brittany Brown taking bronze for the US in 20.20.
Boxing:
In a bronze medal match in the men’s 71 kg category, Omari Jones of the USA and Lewis Richardson of Britain shared bronze.
Similarly, in the women’s 50 kg category, Nazym Kyzaibay of Kazakhstan and Aira Villegas of the Philippines took bronze.
Janjaem Suwannapheng of the Philippines and Chen Nien Chin of Taiwan took bronze in the women’s 66 kg category.
Ireland’s Kellie Harrington won the gold medal in the women’s 60 kg category after beating Yang Wenlu of China by split decision in the final.
In the match that took earlier on August 3 Wu Shi Yi of Taiwan and Beatriz Iasmin Soares Ferreira of brazil shared bronze.
