Microfinance victims resume protests over agreement non-compliance
Frustration grows in Mahottari as microfinance institutions ignore previous commitments, prompting renewed demonstrations.Sunita Baral
Victims of microfinance institutions in Mahottari have taken to the streets again, protesting the government’s failure to implement a previously signed agreement with the microfinance struggle committee.
Shilam Yadav, chair of the committee, accused microfinance institutions of violating the agreement by intensifying pressure on borrowers. Reports indicate that institutions have resumed auctioning collateral and sending staff to borrowers’ homes to demand repayments. Over 1,000 victims in the district have reportedly received foreclosure notices, further fuelling their grievances.
The agreement, signed in March, had outlined several key measures to support victims, including loan waivers for severely affected individuals such as the injured, disabled, and chronically ill. Additionally, it addressed issues related to principal repayment, interest, penalties, blacklisting, and the release of collateral. A task force comprising experts and representatives from both sides was to be formed, with a mandate to present solutions within 60 days.
The lack of tangible progress has left victims disillusioned, leading to the resumption of protests. Demonstrators are calling on authorities to fulfil their commitments and ensure the promised measures are implemented promptly.
“The government must act immediately to alleviate the suffering of borrowers and enforce the terms of the agreement,” said Yadav, underscoring the urgency of the situation.
