The State Affairs and Good Governance Committee of the House of Representatives has summoned Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak to discuss the recent pro-monarchy protests in Kathmandu. He has been called to the committee meeting at 11 am on Friday.
Ramhari Khatiwada, the committee’s chair, said the decision was made to seek answers from the home minister regarding the violent incidents on March 28, when protesters engaged in vandalism, arson, and looting in areas including Tinkune, Koteshwar, and Jadibuti.
Also, a video journalist Suresh Rajak and Sabin Maharjan, a resident from Kirtipur, lost their lives during the protest.
During Wednesday’s committee meeting, several lawmakers insisted Lekhak be summoned for an explanation. Nepali Congress lawmaker Hridayaram Thani demanded that the minister clarify the reasons behind the violence.
“Why did the incident occur? The committee should summon the home minister to answer. Ideally, the prime minister should also be questioned, but at the very least, the home minister must be called,” Thani said.
Congress lawmaker Sarita Prasai echoed Thani, stating that the incident required a thorough investigation as various issues had surfaced. Congress General Secretary and lawmaker Bishwa Prakash Sharma also emphasised seeking the truth behind the Tinkune incident to be uncovered.
CPN-UML lawmaker Rajendra Rai supported the demand for the home minister’s response, while Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) lawmaker Buddhiman Tamang objected to allegations linking his party to the violence. He demanded the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the matter.
