Morang District Police Chief Deepak Pokharel said the protesters were detained after they tried to march towards the provincial assembly by breaching the prohibited area at Devkota Chowk.
Protesters, mainly associated with various ethnic organisations, have announced to picket the provincial assembly in a bid to disrupt the budget session set to start on Sunday.
The District Administration Office, Morang, has issued a prohibitory order to restrict demonstrations at some crucial places including the premises of the offices and residences of the chief minister, ministers, provincial head and the district administration office.
The security personnel have been deployed at major entry points of Biratnagar to return vehicles carrying protesters from hilly and other districts of Koshi Province.
Various ethnic groups in the region have staged a series of protests after the provincial assembly renamed the province as Koshi on March 1. The protesters want a name that, they say, reflects the identity of dominant ethnic groups of the province.
