Complaint filed against prison chief, security personnel over death of inmates

A relative of an inmate who died in a clash at Sankhuwasabha district prison has lodged a complaint with the police against the prison chief and security personnel.
The complaint was registered at Sankhuwasabha District Police on Saturday against Rajendra Ghimire, acting chief of the district prison, and Assistant Inspector of Police Laxmi Chaudhary among others.
Thirty-year-old Prakash Tolangi from Madi Municipality-5 of Sankhuwasabha filed the complaint, said Deputy Superintendent of Police Birendra Godar of Sankhuwasabha District Police Office.
Two people died following a scuffle between inmates on Wednesday. Akash Balami, 28, from Nuwakot, serving a sentence in a theft case, and Binod Tolangi, 19, from Sankhuwasabha, who was serving a sentence for rape, died after a fight broke out inside the prison.
The duo was caught by prison administration officials while trying to escape the facility by cutting the window of the prison toilet and were detained inside the prison. Soon after they were caught, a scuffle broke out between the inmates resulting in their deaths.
The victims were found dead in the prison cell at around 4am.
Seven other inmates have been taken into police custody to investigate the incident.
A three-member committee, under the coordination of Assistant Chief District Officer Mohanmani Ghimire, has also been formed to carry out the investigation.
