Hundreds of people in the eastern part of Taplejung district have been affected following Friday’s landslide that claimed the lives of four people in ward 2 of Phaktanglung Rural Municipality.
According to the locals, the incessant rainfall has posed a serious threat to the residents of Sirijangha Rural Municipality-6 and Yamphudin village settlement.
“Except for Bhotegaun, no other place in ward 8 is safe,” said Krishna Gurung, the chairperson of the ward. “Rain has affected everything. We have asked the locals to identify and find shelter in safe places.”
Over a dozen homes across the district have been considered at high risk, as landslides, occurring from both back and front of the houses, have sandwiched most buildings.
In Mamangkhe too, locals have been displaced as the landslides have either swept their homes away or rendered them inhabitable, said local Kailash Limbu.
The Armed Police Force personnel have been deployed to provide much needed assistance and safety. However, the personnel are facing difficulties reaching the high risk areas as mud mounds from landslides have obstructed roads across the district.
