Strong winds on Wednesday night damaged hundreds of mud houses in Gulariya Municipality, Bardiya district. According to the police, three people were injured by falling trees.
Superintendent of Police Tulasiram Aryal from the Bardiya District Police Office said the storm at 9pm damaged 50 percent of the mud houses in ward 7 of the municipality. Ward chair Manoj Kumar Yadav said the ward has around 3,000 mud houses.
The injured individuals include 72-year-old Jahura Dhobi and 70-year-old Kallu Godiya. They have returned home after receiving treatment at a hospital, Yadav said.
In addition to damaging houses, the storm also destroyed banana plantations and ready-to-harvest mango crops. Fallen trees and snapped wires caused a power outage that had yet to be restored as of 10am today.
Narayan Aryal, chief of the Nepal Electricity Authority in Bardiya, said around 100 electric poles were knocked down by the storm. He said efforts are underway to restore power supply to Gulariya, the district headquarters, and other affected areas.
