Nepal Police Club moved to the top of the ANFA Women’s League standings after they defeated Bagmati Youth Club 2-0 at the ANFA Complex in Satdobato, Lalitpur on Tuesday.
Goals by Niru Thapa and Puja Rana secured three points for Police, earning the departmental side seven points from three matches—one clear of reigning champions Armed Police Force Club, who have a game in hand.
Tribhuvan Army Club lie in third position and are set to face Waling Municipality on Wednesday.
Thapa came close to giving Police an early lead in the 4th minute when Anuska Sherpa put her through but Bagmati goalkeeper Sujata Tamang reacted brilliantly to produce a superb save to deny her.
But Thapa did not miss the next opportunity. Thapa showcased her excellent control with the ball to chest down Birsana Chaudhary’s cross and deftly lifted it over onrushing Bagmati’s goalie Tamang to give Police the breakthrough.
Police dominated the possession but still struggled with their finishing, squandering a number of chances to extend their advantage.
Thapa once again threatened the Bagmati defence in the 19th minute as she outran her markers to connect with a delivery from Revika Pandey and beat advancing goalie Tamang with a smart flick on but her shot narrowly missed the target.
Susmita Thing had a golden chance to further Police’s lead from close range in the 23rd minute when Tamang's poor attempt to block a cross from Sherpa left the ball at her feet. But Thing hesitated, allowing Tamang to recover and smother the danger.
Bagmati had a difficult first half, failing to register a single attempt on goal.
Police’s dominance continued after the restart as well but it was a similar tale for them as they controlled the show but failed to find the clinical edge.
Thing terrorised Bagmati box in the 49th minute unleashing a powerful left-footed strike from inside the penalty area but Tamang stood tall and parried the effort.
Thing spurned another big opportunity in the 53rd minute as she failed to convert Thapa’s pinpoint cross that only needed a simple tap-in to find the net.
It was Rana Magar who finally gave Police the joy in the 82nd minute as she outfoxed Bagmati defence to seize possession inside the box and sent a thunderous left-footed drive that left Tamang with no chance.
It was Bagmati’s third consecutive defeat in the Super League stage, having also lost to Army (2-0) and APF (5-1).
Despite their poor form, Bagmati still remain in fourth place, as Waling, the other team in the second round, have yet to register a victory.
