Jumla’s Sunmaya Budha clinches 100km Ultra Marathon title in Hong Kong

Sunmaya Budha of Jumla has secured victory in the 100km Ultra Marathon held in Hong Kong. Born in Patarasi Rural Municipality-2, Pere village, she completed the gruelling race in 11 hours, 11 minutes, and 47 seconds, outperforming her Slovakian rival Veronika Leng by 14 minutes and 25 seconds. Leng finished second with a time of 11 hours, 25 minutes, and 22 seconds, followed by Vietnam’s Ha Thi Hau, who secured third place in 12 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds.
Saroj Shahi, chair of the Karnali Sports Club, praised Sunmaya’s performance, calling it “an inspiration to all.” He highlighted her achievement not only as a victory but also as a record-breaking accomplishment that elevated her name to new heights.
Sunmaya strategically balanced her pace throughout the race, maintaining high energy and determination until the finish line. Despite the challenges posed by Hong Kong’s terrain, fatigue, and unpredictable weather, her resilience and mental preparation proved key to her success. “Her perseverance and focus earned her this victory,” said world-record-holder Hari Bahadur Rokaya.
Growing up amidst the rugged terrain of Jumla prepared Sunmaya for the challenges of ultra-marathon racing. Shahi attributed her success to her deep dedication to the sport, disciplined lifestyle, and unwavering commitment to her goals. “This achievement reflects the rigorous training, sacrifices, and determination she has shown over the years,” he remarked.
Sunmaya described her win as the result of immense effort, commitment, and relentless perseverance. “This success is not just personal but a victory for the entire nation,” she said. “I will not stop here. My journey of continuous effort will continue.”
Her triumph has become a source of inspiration for Nepali women, showcasing their potential to excel in sports on international platforms. “Sunmaya’s determination and success demonstrate that women can make significant contributions in sports,” added Rokaya.
