The Netherlands defeated Thailand by one wicket in a last-ball thriller in the Nepal Women’s T20I Triangular Series at the TU Cricket Ground in Kirtipur on Thursday, denying the Thai women from clinching the trophy with a match to spare.
Thailand had been aiming to secure the trophy outright with victory against the Dutch, a side they had already defeated twice in the series.
However, despite a dramatic middle-order collapse, the Netherlands successfully chased down the 110-run target.
Requiring eight runs off the final over, tailenders Isabel van der Woning collected five from three deliveries off Phannita Maya and Silver Siegers added three off two balls, sealing the Dutch side’s first win against Thailand in the series.
The outcome also ended Thailand’s unbeaten run.
The victory also took the Netherlands level on eight points with Thailand, who still have a game in hand.
Despite the setback, Thailand still have the edge in the title race, needing a win—or even a narrow defeat—against hosts Nepal, whom they have already beaten twice, on Friday.
But the hosts will be looking to salvage pride with a consolation win. A heavy defeat for Thailand, however, could hand the trophy to the Netherlands.
Fresh off a commanding 10-wicket victory against Nepal on Wednesday despite the home team posting a challenging 145 total, Phebe Molkenboer and Sterre Kalis gave the Netherlands a good start by adding 28 for the opening wicket.
Yet, Thailand bowlers, led by brilliant Thipatcha Putthawong (4-12), quickly applied the brakes.
Putthawong made the breakthrough in the fourth over, dismissing Kalis (14 off 12) and soon dispatched skipper Babette de Leede (4) two overs later to disrupt the chase.
Robine Rijke offered brief resistance with 20 off 21 but Onnicha Kamchomphu (3-19) dismissed her in the 13th over, before Maya (2-25) accounted for Molkenboer (32 ball 42) in the 14th over, triggering a collapse that saw Iris Zwilling (1), Heather Siegers (5), Eva Lynch (1), Caroline de Lange (6) fell in quick succession.
Putthawong and Kamchomphu shared two wickets apiece in that passage of play.
Frederique Overdijk added seven off eight balls to push the total past 100-run mark before Maya struck again in the second ball of the final over to send back Overdijk.
Siegers and Van der Woning then held their nerves to complete the chase in the final ball of the innings, at 110-9.
Earlier, Thailand opted to bat first and posted 109-5 from their allotted 20 overs, anchored by vital contributions from Natthakan Chantham and Chanida Sutthiruang.
The Netherlands’ Zwilling (3-9) rattled Thailand’s top order, dismissing Aphisara Suwanchonrathi (0), Nannapat Koncharoenkai (3) and Nattaya Boochatham (6) within the first 4.1 overs to leave Thailand reeling at 10-3.
But Chantham played an unbeaten 36 off 46 deliveries to steady the innings.
Skipper Chaiwai added 15 off 26, before Chanida Sutthiruang helped Chantham control the innings with 32 off 28 balls.
Siegers ended stays of both Chaiwai (in 10.5 overs) and Sutthiruang (in 19.2 overs) before Suwanan Khiaoto’s four-ball 10 provided a late boost to Thailand’s total.
But it ultimately proved insufficient as the Dutch pulled off a stunning chase to keep the title race alive.
