Border outpost relocated from Tinkar to Chhangru as mercury dips
Police cite a lack of infrastructure for seasonal relocation in the high-altitude region.Manoj Badu
The District Police Office in Darchula said the border outpost in Chhyalek, Tinkar, has been relocated to Chhangru due to extreme cold.
Information Officer Kantiraj Joshi said the police team stationed in Chhyalek moved to Chhangru on November 23. While residents of Tinkar, located in ward 1 of Byas Rural Municipality, typically descend to the district headquarters during winter, the police shift to Chhangru to continue operations.
Led by Police Inspector Chakra Bahadur Singh, the team continues to patrol Tinkar from their temporary base in Chhangru. A police officer said that the freezing temperatures and lack of suitable infrastructure make it impossible to remain in Chhyalek during winter.
The police team is expected to remain in Chhangru until April next year. Officers said the lack of government-provided facilities for high-altitude living has made these seasonal relocations an annual necessity.
Tinkar and Chhangru, located near the India-encroached Kalapani area, experience heavy snowfall every winter. However, the Armed Police Force stationed in Chhangru operates year-round, providing continuous security in the region.
