The Qatar Royal Family’s air ambulance, an Airbus A319 equipped with state-of-the-art medical facilities, landed in Dhaka last night to transport BNP Chairman Khaleda Zia to London today for advanced medical care.
“While specific details of the aircraft remain confidential for security reasons, I can confirm it is modelled on the Airbus A319,” an official at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), speaking on condition of anonymity, told BSS yesterday.
The air ambulance, scheduled to carry Khaleda Zia to London at 10:00pm, has the capacity to manage critical and long-distance patient transfers with exceptional care and efficiency.
Advanced medical technology onboard
Aviation expert Kazi Wahidul Alam described the A319 air ambulance as a “flying intensive care unit (ICU)”. He highlighted its advanced medical capabilities, saying, “This aircraft is equipped with the latest medical technology to manage emergencies, ensuring continuous patient care during transit.”
According to Airbus, the A319 features ventilators, defibrillators, infusion pumps, and advanced cardiac monitors. It also includes dedicated storage areas for medical supplies, ensuring readiness for a range of emergencies.
The spacious cabin layout allows for seamless movement of medical staff, enabling efficient life-saving interventions throughout the journey.
Customisable interior for patient care
Unlike traditional air ambulances, the A319 offers a spacious and customisable interior. Configurations include areas for stretchers, private patient zones, and seating for accompanying family members or specialists.
The onboard medical team from Qatar's royal medical unit includes four physicians and paramedics. This team is equipped to handle emergencies such as cardiac arrests or trauma cases, working closely with the flight crew to ensure patient safety.
Features for patient comfort and safety
The A319 air ambulance is outfitted with advanced climate control systems and soundproofing to minimize in-flight stress and enhance patient comfort. Real-time communication systems enable the onboard medical team to consult with ground-based experts, ensuring uninterrupted care.
Additionally, a pressurised cabin maintains optimal oxygen levels, crucial for patients with respiratory conditions, while other amenities ensure a smooth and secure journey for critically ill individuals.
Long-range capabilities and rapid deployment
With enhanced fuel capacity, the A319 air ambulance can undertake long-haul flights, making it ideal for intercontinental medical evacuations. Its ability to land on shorter runways allows it to reach less accessible airports swiftly.
Khaleda Zia’s journey to London
During a press briefing yesterday, AZM Zahid Hossain confirmed that, after completing the necessary formalities, Begum Khaleda Zia will depart today at 10:00pm from HSIA. She will travel aboard the special air ambulance provided by Qatar's Amir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.
The flight will follow a route from Dhaka to Doha and then proceed to London’s Heathrow International Airport.
Zahid Hossain also mentioned that six members of Khaleda Zia’s medical board will accompany her on the journey. The 79-year-old former prime minister has long been suffering from multiple health complications, including liver cirrhosis, heart disease, and kidney issues.
