‘Snow Leopard’ receives honourable mention
The documentary was awarded at the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival in Mexico.Post Report
The documentary film ‘Snow Leopard’, directed by journalist Pradip Pokhrel, has won the Honorable Mention Award at the Wildlife Conservation Film Festival in Mexico. The festival, which took place from October 24 to 27, featured hundreds of films from 14 countries, including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, France, and Germany. All films highlighted the theme of wildlife conservation.
Pokhrel’s documentary focuses on the conservation efforts of Dr Som Ale, a Nepali conservationist devoted to snow leopard protection in Nepal for three decades. The film depicts Ale's journey, which began in 1993, to protect snow leopards in Manang, where they were once seen as a threat by locals who lost livestock to these predators. Ale's conservation efforts gradually expanded to Mustang, Upper Dolpa, Sagarmatha, and Manaslu regions, inspiring local communities and schools to support snow leopard protection.
The documentary illustrates Ale’s struggle to change local attitudes, with support from initiatives like the Pangche Foundation, which aids snow leopard conservation committees across Nepal.
