An immigration office at Korala, a strategic border point between Nepal and China in Upper Mustang’s Lomanthang, is set to open on Wednesday.
Mustang security officials said Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak is scheduled to inaugurate the office in Nechung, ward 1 of Lomanthang Rural Municipality.
“If there are no changes, the immigration office at Korala will be inaugurated by the Home Minister on Wednesday,” said Mustang’s Chief District Officer Bishnu Prasad Bhushal. “This new office will help streamline cross-border travel and operations at Korala Dry Port.”
The prefabricated 10-room immigration and security post, constructed by the Gandaki provincial government, was recently equipped with electricity and internet facilities.
After surveying two locations, the Nepal Intermodal Transport Development Board has developed a detailed project report (DPR) for the dry port’s future development. Basic infrastructure, such as electricity and telecommunications, was installed in the initial phase.
On the Chinese side, a customs office with modern information technology has been established, alongside quarantine facilities, staff accommodations, a laboratory, warehouses, parking for trucks and containers, and security posts.
Situated at an altitude of 4,650 metres, the Korala border point was officially opened on November 13 last year.
