Around 500 industries at Morang Industrial Corridor that were inundated in the recent flooding in the Tarai have been shut down for the past three days.
The shutdown, prompted by a widespread power outage after flood waters entered Duhabi grid of Nepal Electricity Authority, has led to halt in production.
The godown facilities housing machineries and offices of the industries have been inundated. However, the flood waters are receding in the area with the ceasing of the rains but removing the mud from the industries’ premises has become another challenge.
Meanwhile, once the mud is removed and electricity is restored the industries could come into operation, said Avinash Bohora, central member at Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce & Industries.
Bohora further said that it will take almost 3-4 days before normalcy as there is no diesel or petrol to run the generators and with the ongoing situation, it’ll take the workers a few more days to reach the job site.
With the shutdown, the industries at Morang Industrial Corridor will have to bear a loss of Rs20 million per day and around 300,000 workers will miss their pay.
