RPP attempts to breach restricted zone; police issue warnings
Party moves ahead with rally from Maitighar to New Baneshwar amid the government’s warning.
Post Report
Police issued warnings through loudspeakers on Sunday after Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) protesters attempted to breach the restricted zone during their rally from Maitighar to New Baneshwar.
The rally moved towards New Baneshwar despite prior government warnings. Police began asking the demonstrators not to breach the restricted zone after they tried to push through security barricades near the prohibited area.
On Saturday, the home ministry had warned the RPP against violating restrictions, saying that any breach would lead to legal action. The ministry said it was alarmed by public statements from RPP leaders announcing their intent to defy the ban.
The RPP’s Central Executive Committee had decided in a meeting on Thursday to stage protests in restricted zones, demanding the release of party leaders and cadres arrested during the March 28 demonstration. Those arrested include Vice-chair Rabindra Mishra and General Secretary Dhawal Shumsher Rana, both held in connection with the Tinkune incident.
The government has designated several locations in Kathmandu, including the area around the federal parliament building in New Baneshwar, as restricted zones. Despite this, the RPP had announced its plans to breach the zone at Bijulibazar, near the parliament.
The party, which has been calling for the reinstatement of a constitutional monarchy and declaring Nepal a Hindu state, previously held a protest at Balkhu on April 8 as permitted by authorities.
