The family of 24-year-old Aanandi Devi Sadaya of Jagatpur Donwari in ward 3 of Nawarajpur Rural Municipality, Siraha, is preparing to file a complaint against police and locals for allegedly trying to cover up a sexual assault case.
The complaint will be lodged against Sanjeev Kumar Yadav, 22, and Shyam Sundar Yadav, 32, who have already been charged with attempted rape, as well as their fathers—Upendra Yadav and Shivadutt Yadav—local Narendra Yadav, and police personnel, including, Police Inspector Rabi Raj Mainali of the Area Police Office, Maheshpur Patara.
According to Sunil Sada, spokesperson for the Nepal National Musahar Association, discussions are ongoing to file additional charges under abetment to suicide and attempts for out-of-court settlement. He said legal proceedings will proceed following consultations with the victim’s family and legal experts.
“This is no longer just a sexual abuse case—Aanandi was pushed to take her own life,” Sada told the Post. “We are working with the family and legal professionals before taking further steps.”
Aanandi was found hanging at her home around 3pm on Tuesday. She had earlier alleged that Sanjeev and Shyam Sundar attempted to rape her on December 24.
Although a complaint was presented the same day at the area police office, the victim’s family said the police and the accused tried to settle the matter informally. It was only after media attention that the police formally registered the case on March 9, over two months later.
Despite the case being filed, the accused have not yet been arrested. The family said Aanandi had been under severe distress and struggling to find justice for four months before she died.
