Nepal, China sign nine deals
Prime Minister Oli’s visit to Beijing sees deals on infrastructure, trade, and development cooperation.Post Report
Nepal and China signed a total of nine deals, including memorandums of understanding and agreements, on Tuesday during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli's official visit.
According to the foreign ministry spokesperson Krishna Prasad Dhakal, the agreements and MoUs include letter of exchange on the construction of the Tokha-Chhahare tunnel, MoU on Nepal-China trade enhancement, exchange of certificate on the completion of the nine-storey Basantapur Durbar reconstruction, protocol on export of thermally processed buffalo meat, and MoU on development plan (2025-2029) between the Finance Ministry and the China International Development Cooperation Agency of China.
Likewise, a memorandum of understanding on economic and technical assistance, exchange of letters on cash assistance of RMB300 million, MoU on volunteer Chinese language teachers and another MoU between Nepal Television and China Media Group (CMG) on communication technology.
Prime Minister Oli was received by Chinese Premier Li Qiang at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing earlier on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Oli was accorded with a guard of honour by the Chinese People’s Liberation Army. The ceremony, attended by prominent Chinese leaders, also included formal introduction of the respective delegations by the two leaders.
Later today, Oli is scheduled to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Oli leads an 87-member delegation, which includes his spouse Radhika Shakya, Foreign Minister Arzu Rana Deuba, senior advisors, members of parliament, high-ranking government officials, and business leaders.
A Cabinet meeting held on Sunday approved the visit and endorsed the projects and agreements to be signed. During his stay, Oli will meet Zhao Leji, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, and deliver a keynote speech at Peking University.
He will also address the Nepal-China Business Forum on Wednesday, which is being jointly hosted by the Embassy of Nepal in Beijing, the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), and the Federation of Nepalese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FNCCI).
Following the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Oli and Chinese Premier Li Qiang today, the two countries signed the following bilateral agreements and MoUs:
1. Exchange of Letter on Tokha Chahare Tunnel Road
2. MOU on Nepal-China trade enhancement
3. Exchange of Certificate on the completion of the Nine-storey Basantapur Durbar reconstruction
4. Protocol on export of thermally processed buffalo meat
5. MOU on development plan
6. MOU on financial and technical assistance
7. Exchange of Letter on cash assistance
8. MOU on Volunteer Chinese language teachers
9. MOU on communication technologies between Nepal Television and China Media Group
